Summer Visual Arts at EOSA
This is a quick view at the summer visual arts programs at Castlemont Highschool in East Oakland (formerly East Oakland School of the Arts - E.O.S.A). This program was made possible by SOPA. Instructor Dawood Marion gave students a 5 week course involving drawing from observation, color theory, conceptual development and final illustration. The students responded well to Dawood's lessons where he introduces college level and professional techniques and makes them approachable for 9th graders transitioning to 10th grade.
Dawood's mantra "Build Your Confidence" was the theme of this 5 week course. Students learned that with focus and an unrelenting will to learn they could produce professional quality work.
The paintings in this video were from the 3 week project titled,"Core Values Illustration." Ms. Christina Villarreal and John Lynch brought the idea of Castlemont Highschool's Core Values being reflected in the final works for the summer session so that the students coming in from 9th grade would have a firm understanding of the school they are entering.
These Core Values are:
KINSHIP
RESILIENCE
PASSION
HARD WORK
Each student brainstormed, conceptualized, planned and executed they're illustration using methods Dawood learned while in college and working as a professional concept illustrator. Once that students completed they're illustrations they wrote a brief essay on the core values they chose to illustrate.
